Location: Located in Corriente Grande – Yorkín – Talamanca – Province of Limón.
Description: In September 1996, twenty-one indigenous Bribri families constituted the Association of Organic Producers “El Chumú”, which in the Bribri language means “organic banana”. Its goal was to “improve the quality of life of the producers of organic banana through the increase of their production and sales”. During eight years this association tried to develop the activity of organic banana, and when it failed to do so, we decided to constitute a new association oriented mainly towards tourism and the diversification of agriculture. The new organization, named Association for Tourism, Development and Organic Agriculture Yorkín, is currently formed by eighteen families. Its purpose is to procure the dignification and the socio-economic improvement for the inhabitants of Yorkín through the diversification of the production and the development of Community-based Rural Tourism. This task has been taken on by the community with enthusiasm and responsibility, in which tourism is used as a tool for the conservation of nature and the protection of their traditions. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about ancestral practices in organic agriculture, preparation of cacao, weaving of palm leaves, the making of handicrafts of different natural materials, archery and ancient songs dedicated to the earth, corn, cacao and nature. Moreover, during the magical hikes through the forest, your guides will tell you about the secrets they keep about the mountains, as wise guardians of their indigenous cultural heritage.
